loose leaf piles 3 Replies

I agree with Alexa and that trash does not belong in the loose leaf piles - destined for  compost - trash (bags of dog poop et al)  belongs in your trash can - not in the street.

UC Davis Health System Cancer Center Expansion

UC Davis Health System leadership will break ground on the long-awaited Cancer Center expansion Saturday morning, but construction activity and associated parking lot changes will not begin until June 14.

The delay will allow cancer center leaders more time to inform patients of new traffic circulation and parking during construction, expected to be completed in Spring 2012.

Significant changes to the parking lot are expected to disrupt parking starting Monday, June 14.

The current parking lot entrance on 45th Street will be closed, but the circular driveway for patient drop-off and the main Cancer Center entrance will remain open through the first months of construction. All other traffic will be routed through the Cancer Center's 48th Street entrance. Patients and staff will be directed to use X, not V, Street to enter the lot off of 48th Street.

The visitor parking lot and kiosk will be relocated east of the water tower, and shuttle bus service will bring patients to the cancer center entrance. Valet parking for patients will be available in late summer or early fall.

Household Battery Recycling at the Coloma Center

from Erin Huntington, Elmhurst Neighbor.

Beginning February 2006 the State of California banned the disposal of household batteries in household trash. You must treat these items as household hazardous waste. Household Batteries includes AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9-volt and all others, both rechargeable and single use. You can drop these off at the Coloma Community Center. There is a bin located near the inside entrance of the auditorium . . . walk in the main T Street entrance, turn right, then left, drop your batteries in the bin and know that you are doing something good for our community! No car batteries, please.

Break in on 4600 block of T Street
Middle of the day on Friday, May 20th. Kicked in front window on the porch and stole jewelery and electronics. Shrubbery covering your windows, porches and doors is a perfect shield for robbers. Respond to this email if you need help clearing it out for your safety.
Also, be alert for suspicious people who are loitering around cars. In the last few weeks both of our cars (which were in the driveway) were damaged by someone who tried to break into them by tampering with the locks on the driver's side. This caused expensive repairs. Always call the police, tell all your neighbors and please post any incident.

Changes to Neighborhood Services Department Operations
There have been some changes in the way the former Neighborhood Services Department operates. Neighborhood Services is now a division within the Parks and Recreation Department. The new division continues to hold regular meetings with community organizations on code enforcement, crime prevention, and other neighborhood issues. Khaalid Muttaqi is the division officer responsible for Elmhurst and several other neighborhoods. The Neighborhood Response Team (NRT) program has been eliminated due to budget concerns, but Neighborhood Services will continue to track so-called ―chronic issue properties to try and resolve housing, health and other violations. Fortunately, there were no pending NRT cases within Elmhurst when the program was discontinued.

Adopt a Park Program

The Elmhurst Community Association is teaming up with the City of Sacramento's Adopt a Park program to help provide volunteer assistance on the Coloma Community Center grounds. Tools and training are provided, so no experience needed only the desire to help and mingle with neighbors. Family friendly volunteer activities vary by season and include projects like pruning shrubs, weeding planter beds, and sprucing up playgrounds and other park amenities. Julie Mier, the Parks and Recreation Volunteer Program Coordinator, will provide more information and answer questions at the annual meeting.

Adopt A Park Fact Sheet

The Partners in Parks-Adopt a Park! Program invites volunteers to adopt a park, playground, play field, or a section of a large park, nature area, or trail.
Adoptions will be based on volunteer interest, park need, and availability of the volunteer or group. Adopt A Park Volunteers support but do not replace or displace regular staff activities.

Volunteer activities vary by season and include: planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, and other gardening activities; invasive plant removal/natural areas preservation; litter pick up, and helping spruce up playgrounds and play fields.

The City of Sacramento will provide training and on-going support; so no prior experience is needed; only the desire to learn and help! The City will remove bagged debris and tools and supplies will be provided on request.

Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes and bring heavy duty gardening gloves and are encouraged to wear a hat and long sleeved shirt/pants.

Volunteer Roles:

Park Ambassador: Park Ambassadors are the group leaders of the adopt-a-park groups. Ambassadors communicate with the City about the adopted area on behalf of the neighborhood or group. Ambassadors also assist with planning, promoting, and leading group stewardship events.

Park Steward: Park Stewards are individuals or groups who adopt an area to care for on a regular basis, and lead other volunteers in group stewardship events.

To help or for more information, please contact:
Department of Parks and Recreation Volunteer Program Coordinator: Julie Mier 5730 24th Street, Building 12, Sacramento, CA 95822 jmier@cityofsacramento.org (916) 808-2285

Neighborhood Yard Sale

The Parents Group made enough money to host this year’s Spring Potluck and Egg Hunt, as well as provide some additional programming this year, through its Neighborhood Yard Sale last year. We hope more of the neighborhood will join us later this summer in supporting the cause, either by selling your own items alongside us, by donating items for the Neighborhood Association and Parents Group to sell, or by buying! Please start a pile of things to sell now! More information coming soon.

Fun Facts May 2010

December 1861 and January 1862 brought about devastating floods that placed the future of the city in doubt. In order to resolve the situation, the city residents agreed that additional levee construction was necessary. However, the city was divided between camps that supported a relatively small grading of a few feet to raise the city just above the rivers' cresting levels, and those that supported a substantial grading to accommodate basements in city businesses.
